Since the Halloween candy-craze has ended, college students and Pocatello residents alike are turning in from the cold and doing their best to survive until winter break. And between homework and planning out Christmas gifts, it might be time for a fall reset.

Spice up Homework

Save time to do school work! But, consider romanticizing the boring dull of school with some autumn ambience. String up warm lighting like fairy and twinkle lights in your room, use pumpkin or cinnamon wax-melts, and turn up the fall tunes with – Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season,” Taylor Swift’s “Willow,” or Lord Huron’s “Meet Me in the Woods.”

Sweater Weather Doom-Scroll

Before you tackle tomorrow’s chem test, spend a few hours in the evening to cozy up with your favorite fall shows. Straight from a movie scene, wrap up in a plaid blanket, snag popcorn and a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. Turn on a classic with a New York fall setting – “You’ve Got Mail,” a bookish rom-com with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Or binge the seven seasons of the coffee-shop and small-town vibes of “Gilmore Girls.”

“‘Gilmore Girls’ is like a warm hug and it reminds me of my hometown,” said Charmaine Lowe, a junior majoring in social work. “It’s just very nostalgic.”

Harvest Crafting

Whether you’re a “Pinterest Mom” looking for the latest DIY craft or you just want to change up your room decor, head on down every Saturday for Station Square’s Crafters Market – located at 200 S. Main Street, Historic Downtown – from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Purchase new books, pick up crochet, and try some homemade jam with new vendor line-ups every week.

Come back for the ultimate craft fair over Black Friday weekend – Friday, November 28 from 2-9 p.m. and Saturday, November 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. – to hit up over forty holiday vendors. Food, Christmas games, a stocking giveaway, raffles, and a make and take craft will kick off your holiday shopping!

Fall Foliage Run Away

One of the perks of living in Pocatello is the mountainscape views. Take a drive up and around the Portneuf Medical Center just before 5:00 to catch the sunset. Admire the orange and yellow foliage on your hikes on City Creek Trail, Kinport Peak, or Red Hill Trail – the 1.9 mile walk just above the Rendezvous Building. If you’re not a fan of hikes, take a stroll around the Quad and pick up a collection of fallen leaves.

“My favorite way to get away from school stress is spending time outside instead of cooped up inside,” said Kelsey Hyde, a sophomore majoring in bio med.

Transition into Christmas

As the days get colder and darker, many are left with a slight side of seasonal depression that Pocatello might just have the cure to. Wander through almost every Old Town store and find Christmas lurking in the shadows.

Take that final step, though, and let all the Christmas in through Historic Downtown’s Annual Christmas Night Lights Parade on Friday, November 28. At 6:30, the fire-truck Santa and other parade entries themed after the “Traditions of Christmas Past” will illuminate the night and break through the dreary fall spirit.

“Fall is the best season,” said Elan’i Gorostiza, a sophomore in music education. “The weather is cool and the colors change beautifully.”
