“Let’s ‘Netflix and Chill,’” says Anthony from Tinder.
“Why are you single,” asks Sarah from Hinge.
“I mean you’re decent looking,” comments Luke from Duet.
If you’ve ever experienced a dating app, you’ve also experienced a plethora of these messages in your inbox. The creeps, red flags and the “will-be-single-till-their-fifties” making you regret every decision that brought you here.
However, instead of dwelling in your dating dilemmas, choose to spend this Valentine’s Day with people that won’t make you feel like taking three showers after reading their text.
Ladies, find that excuse to buy that adorable (and very overpriced) heart Icon Juice Glass or that enticing white-frosted confetti cake in the bakery. Stroll down the Valentine’s aisle and snag the fluffy highland cow plushie you’ve been eyeing for a month.
Better yet, snag two of each for you and for your best girl friend to kick off Galentine’s Day.
The TikTok-sensation and Instagram aesthetic “Galentine’s Day” originated from 2010 pop culture. After the February 11 episode of NBC sitcom “Parks and Rec” (Season Two, Episode 16), fictional character Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) brought the idea of “ladies celebrating ladies” with brunch and heartfelt personalized gifts.
Since then, Galentine’s Day is celebrated Feb. 13, with most girls opting for a rom-com binge, friendship bracelet making, bouquet assembly, photoshoots, vision board crafts, game nights and as always, karaoke.
Unfortunately, no official “bromantic” Valentine’s day exists, although the name “Guy-lentine’s” gets thrown about frequently.
To boost testosterone levels, spend Feb. 15 with your bros doing bachelor party-esque excursions. Golf and shooting rifles seem to be the rather popular choices. College Heights Herald and I suggest shotgunning energy drinks, doing your laundry, playing beer pong (although ISU would recommend regular ping pong) or gazing romantically into your bro’s eyes over a fancy Wingers dinner.
More seriously, opt for a night of burgers and games, plan a 3×3 game of basketball or take yourselves out for a night on the town.
“For my Valentine’s Day, I’m going to go to the gym and watch some movies with my friends after,” says Sadie Still, an ISU student majoring in Sports and Exercise Science.
Regardless of how you want to spend the day, don’t feel pressured to snag any Valentine available. Statistics prove that not everybody around you is taken.
Pew Research showed that in 2023, 86% of adults 18 to 24 were unmarried in the U.S. Among which college graduates are less likely than those with less education to be unpartnered.
If you haven’t found your person yet, don’t fret. It’s possible you just haven’t explored the right activities in Pocatello – try Buckles and Boots line dancing on Mondays and Wednesdays or enjoy several of the ISU campus events.
More likely, you just haven’t read through my previous article, “How to Get a Guy in 10 Steps,” and Braxton’s “How to Find a Girl in 10 Steps!”
