Thumbs up: Homecoming bonfire is on Friday this year
Why was this not done years ago? This is the best part of Homecoming week. I mean, we literally burn the other team’s logo to the ground. How cool is that? But nobody could go before because it was in the middle of the week and people have stuff to do then. This is a great event and now people can actually go because it’s not on a school night.
Thumbs down: Reed Gym’s hours
The hours during the week are fine, but 6 p.m. is way too early to close on the weekends. First of all, nobody in college gets up on the weekends until at least noon, and nobody wants to go workout when they are still recovering from… we’ll call it, the previous night’s events.
On Sunday, I have football to watch all day and I’m not about to get up and go to the gym at halftime of the Broncos game. But if they were open until, say 9 p.m., I would go (as long as Denver isn’t on the Sunday night game).
Thumbs up: Relevant Sept. baseball
As a Rockies fan, I’m not used to this. Even a clean three-game sweep at the hands of the Dodgers is fun to me. Why? Because these games actually matter and watching my Rockies pursue their first division title in franchise history is something that has never happened. Even if they don’t make the playoffs, I can still say with confidence that this was a fun year for Rockies baseball.
Thumbs down: Thursday Night Football
The Jets and the Browns? That’s the best they can come up with? I get that every team has to play a Thursday night game at least once a season, but the Jets and the Browns? The sad part is I still watched NFL Network’s replay of the game the following day because I was busy Thursday night. I have no idea how the NFL does it, but I watch that slop fest every single week, even if it is the Jets and the Browns. At least this week’s matchup between the Vikings and the Rams should be a lot better. Way better than the Jets and the Browns. I mean give me a break.
Thumbs up: New season of South Park
With all that’s going on with Trump, the mainstream media and political correctness, this has the potential to be a fantastic season of South Park. This topical adult cartoon show makes fun of everything and everyone and the current state of American politics should give Trey Parker and Matt Stone plenty to work with.
Thumbs down: Interstate construction
I-15 has been down to two lanes south of Pocatello for what seems like a decade now and that interchange where I-86 turns into I-84 is one of the most confusing construction zones I have ever gone through. The first time I went through that interchange, I started going towards Utah (I wasn’t going to Utah).
The one south of town is just flat dangerous. If you come off Highway 30 (the road that goes to Lava) the makeshift freeway entrance gives you about a six-inch merge lane with no way to see who is coming towards you at 65 miles per hour.
