Study in another state: Exchange program coming to ISU for 2019-20 school year

ISU is expecting a new exchange program to begin during the 2019-20 school year.

The program is called the National Student Exchange (NSE), which is a group composed of over 200 college campuses located throughout the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The program will be available for students that are interested in studying at another campus.

“We are still getting our application process set up and approved, but the priority deadline for an exchange starting next fall is Feb. 20, 2019,” said Amber Greene, the lead NSE coordinator for ISU.

Originally founded in 1968, NSE annually offers over 2,000 students the opportunity to engage in cultural diversity and a sense of community. Its mission is to inspire academic enrichment and personal exploration amongst their students and instill a strong belief that adding a collegiate experience away from their home campus will help to enhance the student’s education.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to research the program prior to applying. Applicants must meet NSE’s requirements in order to be eligible to apply, although meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a spot within the exchange.

In order to be eligible, students must be in good academic standing and attend a NSE member campus full-time. Incomplete grades from previous courses, financial obligations to your home campus and current or pending probationary status will result in ineligibility. However, your host and home campuses may have different or additional eligibility requirements. While abroad, students are required to maintain good academic standing and a full-time status and must comply with all rules and regulations of the host campus.

The student’s home campus charges a nonrefundable application fee in order to submit a request for student placement. Program options include the ability to study abroad, internships, student-teaching and residential assistant exchanges.

“It is a chance to leave the familiar and explore places you’d never thought you would go to, all while earning credits towards your degree and at a manageable cost,” Greene said.

NSE utilizes two separate tuition and fee payment plans: the host payment, where the student pays in-state tuition fees that correlate with the host campus, or the home payment, where students pay the tuition and fees of their home campus.

Once the payment plan has been selected, students will then determine what other expenses to expect while enrolling in the program, for example course-related fees and room and board. Students are required to pay all fees and other financial obligations in accordance with stated home and host deadlines.

“Everyone should be able to experience different history, cultures and communities,” said Makenna Little, a senior at ISU. “I think this world would be a better place if everyone understood how people live in different areas of the world.”
