Recording artist Andy Grammer, will be performing at the Jensen Concert Hall in the Stephens Performing Arts Center at Idaho State University on Monday April 14.
Grammer grew up in New York and was introduced to music at a very tender age.
“My dad used to be a children’s singer,” said Grammer. “I learned music from just being around music at a very young age.”
Grammer started writing music in high school and moved to California at the end of high school.
Having been a street performer for three years prior to being discovered, Grammer is no stranger to performing in front of audiences.
“I wrote ‘Keep Your Head Up’ at the end of my street performing and ever since then I’ve been touring around the country,” said Grammer.
Grammer’s versatile recognition for music was cultivated at a very young age through his father, children’s music artist Red Grammer.
“I grew up around him writing songs and being on stage,” said Grammer.
Although Grammer’s music would generally be classified under the genre of pop or contemporary soul, his appreciation for music stretches far beyond.
“If you go far enough back, I remember cleaning the house and my parents putting on the Beatles,” said Grammer. “I know what its like to put on a song or an album that you love.”
A visceral appreciation for life lends itself to be the motivating influence behind Grammer’s lyrics.
“I am always writing down things that I am inspired by” said Grammer. “When I go to the studio, I try to match that up with what I’m feeling musically.”
Music has undoubtedly been the marker of changing times. Central to a progressively evolving global society, music infuses the happiness, hardships, and changing attitudes of individuals.
“I just want to serve them in some way,” said Grammer of his music in relation to his fans. “I want it to be something you put on when you’re in the car and it fills you up or it helps you to understand more about your life.”
The importance of music and its ability to alter the way someone feels is undeniable. It is no wonder that from the comforts of home, to the instrumentals that play in your local communal grocery store, music permeates all aspects of our lives.
“Music in general can be used in so many different ways and I just want to impact my listeners in any way,” said Grammer.
Music lends a mood for whatever the occasion may be. The human condition is swayed by the effects of music and lately, relating to the realities of life and speaking ones mind has been the trending inclination of music.
As the rapper Nas said in his song, “I was just trying to show you that if you say what’s on your mind, you can stand the test of time.”
Tickets to see Andy Grammer perform live can be purchased at various areas on campus.
