Idaho State University’s intramural program holds events to allow students to meet new people, stay active and participate in social activities.

“We offer around 70 to 75 different events for the intramural [program] per fiscal year, whether it be team, individual or events per fiscal year,” said Shelby Williams, intramural director.

The intramural program supports events such as the Bengal Triathlon on April 25 and the Basketball Bonzana.

“We sponsor the Bengal Triathlon and provide shirts for all of the collegiate participants,” said Williams.

The program has recently wrapped up Five on Five Basketball, which is a team program offered in the spring semester that is popular amongst students.

Williams said they offer volleyball, soccer, softball, ultimate frisbee, kayaking and jousting to name a few.

On April 26, intramural sports will offer an end-of-semester Five on Five Basketball tournament. All players participating will need to have an IMleagues account and preregistration is required. It is not required to be an ISU student to participate in this event.

If students are interested in a team sport and do not have other members to make up a team with they can visit imleague.com/isu or visit the Campus Recreation office to sign-up to become a free agent.

“If teams are looking for players, they can select from the free agents on the site or on the list. There is a pretty good success rate at getting free agents on a team,” said Williams.

“My first year I didn’t have a team and was placed on one; that is how I made the friends that I continue to play intramurals with,” said senior Jessica Eubanks.

Eubanks has participated in indoor soccer, coed basketball, women’s basketball and softball over her four years at Idaho State University.

“I like to stay active and it is nice to be able to play the sports I like with my friends,” said Eubanks.

The winners of the events are provided with t-shirts.

“I missed playing in high school and club and this gave me a chance to with my friends,” said senior Melissa Lee.

Lee has played softball with the intramural program at ISU for three years.

Williams said it is important to her that those who want to participate are able to. There are also numerous individual events for those not interested in a team activity.

ISU’s intramural program tries to reach out to as many students as possible and address the needs they are interested in. If there is an activity that is currently not offered through the intramural program you can contact Shelby Williams and discuss the event with her.

Participating in events is not the only thing ISU’s intramural program has to offer to the students.

“It provides employment for students. All fees taken in by teams are given back to the students. It is a chance to provide them with a fun on-campus job that offers flexibility with their schedule. You can pick up an application in the Campus Recreation Office,” said Williams.

“The number one way [to get information] is at imleague.com/isu and click intramurals. It will pull up a calendar of events as well as information on these events,” informed Williams.

Interested students can also get information by visiting the Campus Recreation Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or contacting Shelby Williams at ude.usinull@lehsnnum.
