Effective this fall, Idaho State University resident undergraduate student tuition will increase by $425.

The decision, approved by the Idaho State Board of Education on April 28 during a special board meeting, follows a difficult legislative session for higher education, resulting in budget cuts that have created financial pressures for public colleges and universities throughout Idaho.

“These are not simple decisions, and they are not made lightly,” Board President Kurt Liebich said. “We are balancing the very real financial pressures facing our institutions with our responsibility to keep higher education accessible for Idaho students. Our goal is to ensure students have access to high-quality opportunities while maintaining the strength and stability of our institutions.”

The Board shared that a focus was made to ensure a balance between student affordability and long-term sustainability and competitiveness within Idaho’s higher education landscape.

According to a statement released by the Board, Boise State University, University of Idaho and ISU will all increase resident undergraduate student tuition by $425 beginning in the fall while Lewis-Clark State College will increase by $325. The board avoided a percentage increase and focused on dollar amount in order to keep the increase proportionate among lower-tuition institutions.

The tuition increase, according to the Board, also comes alongside the stipulation that costs will be contained, administrations will be efficient and programs will be prioritized according to community and workforce demand.

“Idahoans are choosing our institutions because they deliver affordable, high-quality results,” said Executive Director of the Board, Jennifer White. “The Board’s job is to keep it that way and make sure students and taxpayers understand the investment and see the return.”

The last tuition increase at ISU occurred in 2023 with a 5% hike. While a tuition increase isn’t uncommon, the news comes as students and faculty at ISU process program restructuring and layoffs following state-mandated budget cuts.

On April 1, ISU President Robert Wagner declared that ISU is thriving in various areas despite the difficult period for Idaho higher education. He also shared that ISU resident undergraduate student tuition was 22% lower than state board of education designated peer institutions as of last fall.

“Today, as we navigate budget realities and structural shifts, we are not retreating,” he said. “We are reinforcing our foundation, strategically focusing our resources and continuing to move our mission forward…This moment in our history is about reinforcing alignment with our mission and our long-term strategic plan.”
