This year in Pocatello, there is more than one V-Day event in February. On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Idaho State University Student Social Work Association (SSWA) will be raising awareness of V-Day, an organization that aims to end violence against women and girls.
The V-Day event will be held at CoHo, located at the corner of Fourth and Terry, and begins at 7:30 p.m. The event is free, but the group does ask for donations in hopes of funding an official V-Day in Pocatello next year.
“Our event will have live music by the very talented Jesse James and the Golgotha Gypsy Blues Review and the Katie Smith Duo,” said SSWA secretary Jessica Milford. “We’re also raffling off prizes put together by local store owners and SSWA members and having poetry readings and DJ music.”
Members of the organization will also be sharing information regarding violence against women, specifically in the matters of recognizing its occurrence and getting help to stop it.
“We decided to host this event because one role of social workers is to play as an advocate for our clients. Spreading awareness about important issues such as violence against women is part of this advocate role,” said Milford.
A portion of the proceeds from donations and the raffle will aid SSWA members in attending Advocacy Days, a two day conference for current and future social workers. The remaining funds will go to holding an official V-Day event in 2014.
“It’s important to us that this event is known and that people attend,” said Milford. “Violence against women is a pressing issue, even in Pocatello, and the SSWA is determined to spread awareness.”
