Thumbs up, thumbs down: What sucks and what doesn’t, according to Lucas Gebhart

Thumbs up: Green bean casserole

By far the best dish at Thanksgiving, it has the perfect mix of softness, creaminess and crunchiness that makes for a premiere side dish to the rest of the Thanksgiving feast. It’s not the most popular dish, but all that means is that I can take a little bit more than everybody else.

Thumbs up: Killer Black Friday deals

I got a shirt for five bucks that normally costs $15. Every retail store has massive savings across all departments which end up saving me a ton of money. The lines are usually long, and the stores are usually crowded, but that’s the spirit of the holiday. The huge savings allow me to get an early start on Christmas shopping.

Thumbs up: Pebble Creek

It’s small, but dirt cheap, and you will not find a better bang for your buck when it comes to skiing. What makes Pebble even better is that it’s only a 30-minute drive from campus. The skiing is quick, and the snow typically isn’t half-bad if you go during the winter months. This is the perfect ski slope for college students. It’s close to campus, it’s cheap and the skiing is fast.

Thumbs down: Christmas music

It’s now the time of year where we hear the same 10 songs over and over for the next four weeks. I’m a big fan of Christmas, but Christmas songs get repetitive and annoying as the happiness of Christmas get beaten into your head over and over and over through joyous songs about fat people and reindeer.

Thumbs down: Dutch Bros

This is a very unpopular opinion around these parts, but I am not a fan of Dutch Bros. Their coffee is too hot, and their staff is way too friendly. I don’t get extravagant drinks like mochas and frappuccinos, I get a medium dark roast, and Dutch Bros is not the place to go for a regular coffee. It’s watered down and tastes like a cup of over-boiled water. On top of that, the person serving me coffee wants to know my life story. I’m here to get coffee, not find a new best friend.

Thumbs down: No good pizza places

There are no solid pizza places in Pocatello. They are either too expensive or too cheap. Bigfoot is great, but I can’t really afford to drop 18 bucks on a pizza every time I want one. A place like Villano’s is cheap but is no better than Little Caesar’s. You get what you pay for. Pocatello has all the basics, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s, Domino’s and multiple Pizza Huts, but those are chains, and every town in America has all of those. Pocatello needs a local pizza place that serves medium-quality pizza for a medium price.
