If it seems like karaoke is everywhere, you’re not wrong. Last Wednesday night, Idaho State University hosted its very own karaoke night in the PSUB.

At the event, free snacks, a promise of a good time and tables filled with people ready to cheer their friends on were offered.

There were already plenty of groups ready to belt out their favorite jams right at opening time. Right off the bat, people were already entering in names, songs and starting out the night with genres like country, R&B and movie classics to keep the night rolling.

Many different ranges of talent were showcased during the performances.

“I came here to make some new friends, meet some new people, and have fun,” said Eddy Ryan, an ISU student. “Karaoke is a great place to hear new songs and hear what other people can sing. It’s always fun to see really good singers, but at the same time, not-so-great ones are entertaining as well. It’s all about having fun.”

Some students waved their flashlights back and forth in rhythm to songs like “Before He Cheats,” while the crowd sang with groups during certain segments like “All-Star,” and others stared in awe as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” played through the speakers and televisions they had set up. One student fell out of their chair during a rendition of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.”

There were laughs, cheering and, above all else, fun. It didn’t matter if you sang in silence or burned your lungs out on stage, most of the participants were having a good night doing something wild in the middle of the school week.

ISU’s singing population is fairly small, at least according to the event. Regardless, it showed that there were all types of singing talent in the midst of the university.

Some liked rhythmic blues, and others preferred the sound of a laid-back guitar in old country. Either way, it showed there is more than one type of singer and all different ranges of talent.

“Adele is my preferred choice,” said student Madeline Smith. “I sing in the bathroom all the time in front of my dog. It’s like practicing in front of an audience anyway!”

All karaoke events are somewhat entertaining, even if you choose not to sing. Watching others take the chance to showcase what they’ve got is what makes karaoke such a passion to some attendees.

So whether you were in the corner tables munching on chips and junk food or singing, Karaoke at ISU was a pretty relaxing, fun, and stress-relieving event that could make anyone enjoy a usual slow Wednesday night.
