SAMANTHA’S SAY: PROUD TO BE A BENGAL

The past couple of weeks have served as a reminder of just how proud I am to be a Bengal and student at Idaho State University.

Although I can empathize with fellow students in our parking woes and scheduling frustrations, I can’t deny that Idaho State is one of the best college communities I’ve come across.

Sometimes I don’t think we realize just how lucky we are to have the people and the community we do here at ISU and in Pocatello as a whole.

As students especially, I don’t think we always fully realize and appreciate the services we are privy to here at ISU.

As students, in addition to a quality education, we receive discounted access to a lot of great things in our area through resources granted to us by the university.

From Welcome Back Orange and Black in the fall to Celebrate Idaho State in the spring and everything in between, the university is connecting with the community year-round.

On top of that, ISU often plays host to events open to the public that provide affordable entertainment for the university and the community.

From the Student Health Center to the Dental Hygiene Clinic, from Public Safety to the Eli M. Oboler Library and everything in between, we really do have access to a lot of great resources and services here at ISU.

That’s not even including resources like the Outdoor Adventure Center, the Craft Shop and other clubs and groups on campus available for students.

A few weeks ago I left our weekly staff meeting at “The Bengal” to find that my car had been hit in the parking lot.

As upset as I was at the situation, there is a huge silver lining to this story: within minutes, a Public Safety officer was there and working with me to review video footage and get the situation resolved.

On top of that, a student went out of her way to stop and make a statement after seeing the accident earlier.

If that’s not one of those I-still-have-hope-for-humanity moments, I don’t know what is.

Within hours, I received a call from the Pocatello Police Department, which worked with Public Safety to get insurance information from the responsible party.

I am happy to say that my car is fixed!

I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I was to have such a quick, professional and helpful response from Public Safety.

I feel the need to remind students that they are here to help and do a great job.

On top of the valued resources available to all students at ISU, I think it is important to mention that I work with an amazing team here at “The Bengal” which is composed of talented, driven individuals who are ready and willing to step up when and where they are needed.

I am certain that these groups and individuals are representative of all of the great things ISU has to offer.

I encourage everyone to go out and experience these resources for themselves!
