A small fire started Friday, Feb. 22, in one of Rendezvous’s dorms. The cause of the fire was an unattended candle.

Damage from the fire was limited to the room it started in. There was also some water damage to the room, as well as other rooms in the wing. No injuries were reported.

The room the fire was in is currently being repaired. An outside contractor has been hired by the school to assess the extent of the water damage.

“We were very lucky,” said University Housing Director Craig Thompson.

Residents were evacuated from the building for a little more than an hour while fire crews cleared the building.

While repairs are being made, the residents had to be relocated. They were all offered housing in other on-campus buildings, but some chose to find housing of their own.

Following this, the third fire in a residence hall within less than a year, University Housing is not expected to make any changes to fire safety regulations.

“Our fire safety regulations are perfect the way they are,” Thompson said.

Having candles or other open flames is not allowed by University Housing, and residents are required to sign a contract agreeing to this when they move into a residence hall.

“Occasionally students do things outside the realm of what we tell them,” Thompson said. “Students violate policy.”
