Many American as well as international groups have scrambled to collect and offer aid for those affected by the destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Phillipines. The storm was   one of the worst storms the Philippines has ever faced, leaving thousands of individuals dead and many still missing.

One such fundraiser was held at Idaho State University by the American Red Cross Friday, Nov. 15.

“I can’t say that we approached them to come to campus. It was a location within the city of Pocatello they felt would be central and would be a way to reach as many people as possible in a short time,” said Brooke Barber, director of orientation, leadership and service at ISU.

The desperate situation of the people in the Philippines dealing with homelessness, lack of clean water, hygiene issues, as well as contamination from decaying corpses prompted the fund raising effort.

While not directly responsible for the fundraiser, Barber discussed why she and her office got involved in promoting the event.

“As director of the Lead Center for leadership service, I believe that it fits within the Idaho State overall mission,” said Barber. “To inspire our students to be global citizens who have in mind to assist those in need in our community within Idaho, within the nation, and in times like this around the world.”

Representatives from the American Red Cross were on campus for several hours, and in that time raised an estimated $1,200 through check, cash and credit card donations.

“Over the years in response to worldwide crisis, the Red Cross made the determination that it is very difficult to transport clothing and material items overseas,” said Barber. “It’s a lot less expensive to raise funds, go to their regional counterparts on other continents, purchase what is need and support the relief effort.”

While the fundraiser is over, the people living in the region of the Philippines continue to try to rebuild their lives.

Individuals who might have missed the fundraiser but still wish to help have many options.

“There are many ways to help. They can go to the Red Cross website to make a donation. They can also go to certain social media sites and donate directly,” said Barber. “Twitter is an example of that. Twitter has been raising support. Certain cell phone providers allow you to text a certain number and they will add the donation to your monthly bill and it’s given directly to the Red Cross.”

Outside of the current crisis, the Red Cross holds several blood drives every year on campus, as the need for blood is always high.
