Men and Women’s Tennis post impressive victories on weekend of home matches

Men’s Tennis

The Idaho State University men’s tennis team opened with a home opening sweep of Lewis-Clark State, 7-0.

“The guys came out and played really well,” said Idaho State interim head coach Mark Rodel. “You never know what to expect when you play a team like Lewis-Clark. They often send a good team. We didn’t know what to expect. We came out prepared just like we would normally and it is just a matter of executing as best you can and stay the course.”

The Bengals were solid all morning as Lukas Ridemar and Fynn Lohse won its doubles match 6-2 over Luca Menezes and Vannasak Chheang. Patrik Trhac and Gary Rendek beat William Bruchard and Marcus Gavelin, 6-1.

With the doubles point already secure Kyler Hartman and Yohann Prinsen were ahead before the match was called.

In singles play, Ridemar earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Larry Magalasin while Lohse beat Bruchard 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3 singles Trhac took down Luca Meneze 6-1, 6-2 and Rendek earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gunnar Harlan.

Prinsen beat Marcus Gavelin 6-3, 6-1 while Hartman earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Han-Rong Yue.

The Bengals returned Sunday afternoon to defeat Colorado Mesa 6-1 at Reed Gym.

Idaho State swept doubles, with Ridemar and Lohse winning 6-1 over Alain De La Bastide and Moises Cure. Prinsen and Hartman defeated Mitchell Steadman and C. Albrechtsen 6-3. Trhac and Rendek doubles match was called with the Bengals up 4-3.

Ridemar earned the singles win 6-1, 6-2. Lohse earned a 6-1, 6-3 win while Trhac won 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Rendek won his match 6-4, 6-2 while Prinsen earned a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 win.

Idaho State went 2-0 this weekend and are back on the court Feb. 7 at Utah and Feb. 8 at Weber State.

Women’s Tennis

The Idaho State women’s tennis team also opened its 2020 home season in impressive fashion, sweeping Lewis-Clark State 7-0 on Friday evening in Reed Gym.

“I felt like they played pretty solid today,” said Idaho State head coach Gretchen Maloney. “I think a few of our girls were a little nervous because it was their first home match.

Overall we played well and really consistent.”

In doubles play, Hristina Cvetkovic and Megan Poe beat Begona Andres and Laura Diaz 6-1. Melissa Coburn and Madison Fenske beat Kyle Collier and Alexis Maison 6-4, and Viktoria Pavlovets and Adriene Pavek beat Lizzy Bremer and Sophie Uhlenkott 6-1.

In singles play, Cvetkovic earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Diaz in No. 1 singles. Coburn bested Andres 6-2, 6-0 and Poe beat Laura Rosselli 6-2, 6-2.

Angela Walker earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexis Maison. Adriene Pavek beat Sophie Uhlenkott 6-2, 6-0 and Pavlovets earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kyla Collier.

“I liked the depth,” Maloney said. “We were hitting the ball deep and consistently. It was putting a lot of pressure on them.”

The Bengals returned on Sunday morning to defeat Colorado Mesa, 6-1, in Reed Gym.

“The girls did a lot of things well today,” Maloney said. “They were very consistent and stayed in the points until they got the right ball to attack. In doubles we served and controlled the net well.”

Idaho State recorded a sweep of the doubles matches to earn the point. Cvetkovic and Poe defeated Kristen Kirby and Laura Alsing 6-1. Arkipov and Walker beat Rebecca Osterberg and Maike Waldburger 6-3. Pavek and Pavlovets rounded out the doubles sweep defeating Carolena Campos and Lauren Thomas 6-3.

In singles play, Cvetkovic earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kirby in No. 1 singles. Coburn beat Alsing 7-6 (6), 6-1 and Arkhipov beat Osterberg in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Walker beat Campos 6-1, 6-0 and Fenske defeated Thomas 6-1, 6-0.

The lone Bengal loss came when Poe played Waldburger. The match went back and forth with Waldburger eventually winning a close tiebreaker 4-6, 6-0, 10-8.

The Orange and Black are back in action Feb. 7-8 as they head to Logan, Utah to face Utah State and The University of Texas – El Paso.
