Idaho State University students experienced a tuition hike of 6.1 percent for the 2019-2020 school year.

This raised the average undergraduate tuition to $3,936 a semester and to $7,872 for a full year.

President Satterlee called the tuition raises “less than ideal” in an interview with the Idaho State Journal.

“Idaho State increases tuition and fees only with great reluctance. In the long run, this approach is not good for our students,” Satterlee said.

Other Idaho universities and colleges are facing increases in tuition as well. University of Idaho students will see a 5.6 percent increase in their tuition, Boise State University students will experience a 4.9 percent increase, and Lewis and Clark State College raised tuition by 5.5 percent.

The tuition increase at Idaho State University is the biggest increase in tuition for in-state, full time students out of all other Idaho universities listed. However, Idaho State students can still expect lower tuition over all.

Boise State University students who are both full time and Idaho residents, can expect to pay $4,034 per semester. University of Idaho students who meet the same qualifications can expect to pay $4,152 a semester for the 2019-2020 school year.

“This year the State Board of Education asked Idaho State to present our institutional needs and what it takes to serve all of our students,” Satterlee said. “While these increases are not ideal for our students, they ensure that Idaho State can provide the quality education that our students deserve.”
