Homecoming 2013, themed “50 Years of U” in honor of ISU’s 50th year as a four-year university, began last Saturday, Sept. 28, and will continue through Saturday, Oct. 5.

Events began with the business window-painting event that took place Sept. 28. Clubs from ISU painted many three-by-three spaces on businesses around Pocatello.

Monday, Sept. 30, saw a barrage of homecoming activities for students to participate in. The morning included the annual Spirit Log Hunt kick off. Clubs were given hints as to the log’s location and had to scramble for the prestige of being the first to find it.

That evening, the dip competition was held. Many different flavors of dips were put forth by clubs and judged by students with provided chips.

Finally, after dark Monday night, the bonfire celebration commenced at Holt Arena. This year instead of a plain stack of pallets, the fuel for the fire was in the shape of the letters UND. Coach Kramer also gave a speech during the bonfire.

The sole event held Tuesday, Oct. 1, was the Blazin’ Challenge. Held on the quad, clubs put forth brave volunteers to attempt to eat dangerously hot wings from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Wednesday, Oct. 2, will be another day filled with homecoming activities.

Events will start off with a Skittles tasting contest at noon at the Quad Hypostyle. The competitors will be club members.

“We’ll have a whole bunch of Skittles, so anybody can come and eat Skittles, said Anjel Zamora, co-director of the Student Activities Board (SAB).

Later, a kickoff celebration will be held at Pinehurst Nursery located at 4101 Poleline Road for students, alumni and friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This will be a free event with food provided and beverages available.

The Royalty Pageant will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Building (PSUB) ballroom.

“I did the pageant last year and I was homecoming princess. That was a lot of fun and doing the events for that was so much fun. I can’t wait to watch one of our members compete for that,” said Britney Jacobs, a senior political science and philosophy major, and member of the RHA.

Thursday, Oct. 3, events will begin with powder-puff football at 2 p.m. on the quad and wrap up with a dance competition at 7 p.m. in the PSUB ballroom.

“The dance competition is new this year,” explained Zamora. “Clubs will submit a song into SAB to make sure that we approve it. Then the clubs get a set amount of time to show us their moves and students vote.”

The events occurring Friday, Oct. 4, will start off with the president’s alumni recognition dinner, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Red Lion. Reservations are required and the cost is $40 per person.

Following the dinner, the Boise band A Rotterdam November will perform at 8 p.m. in the PSUB ballroom. The concert is free to attend.

Also on Friday just before midnight on Red Hill, the True Bengal event will take place, in which kisses are exchanged near the pillars and those who kiss become true Bengals.

Saturday the Homecoming Parade will set out at 9:30 a.m. from First Avenue and Center.

Immediately following the parade’s arrival at Holt Arena around noon, a pre-game tailgate party will take place.

Finally, the Homecoming football game against the University of North Dakota will kick off at 2 p.m.
