On Saturday, Sept. 8, the first Great Idaho State University Ambush will challenge students and community members with 15 obstacles over the course of a 5K race.
Participants will compete in teams of four. Team registration is $85 for registration before Friday, Sept. 7, and $100 on race day. Registration can be completed at www.isu.edu/ambush. A portion of the fees will be donated to local charities.
The event was inspired by mud runs around the country. Until the Ambush, the nearest Idaho mud run was in Boise.
“The office of Recruitment Services decided that an event like [the Great ISU Ambush] would not only be a fun event on campus but also a great way to unite our community and surrounding communities,” said ISU recruitment specialist Shawnee Burt.
Over 200 participants are currently registered with the race open for 400. Obstacles include hay walls and mud pits, finishing in a Slip ‘n Slide on Bartz Field.
The event is sponsored by the ISU Recruitment Office and the ISU Credit Union. Community businesses and organizations have also contributed in various ways to the event.
“New Day Products and Resources and the Orange and Black store have donated half the cost of all the T-shirts for the Ambush,” said Burt. “Convergys has printed all of our posters and fliers for the event.”
Burt added that Convergys will be sponsoring two water stations during the race. The City of Pocatello has also provided materials and resources for the event.
“[This] is the first time we have done something like this on campus and it is a great opportunity for students to get involved in what we hope will be something that will continue year after year,” said Burt.
The race earned the title of Ambush as the collective term for a group of tigers.
ISU students and community members are encouraged to watch the race as well as participate.
“[The Ambush] will be a blast,” said Burt. “Grab your roommates and friends and come join us in a very fun event on campus.”
