Local: Century football players will honor teammate who died in a horrific crash before sophomore season

This would’ve been his senior year in high school, but Eric Neibaur’s life ended tragically in summer 2017, which the Diamondbacks haven’t forgotten. Century’s captains will carry a No. 53 Diamondback jersey to midfield for the coin toss before every home game this year in honor of Neibaur, who wore that number on the school’s freshman team in 2016. Century senior captain Dillon Samana said Eric wasn’t the star of the freshman team or even a starter, but he could be the life of the team. Eric encouraged players on the sideline to cheer on the squad. When Eric was on the field, he would celebrate teammates’ big plays.

Statewide: Idaho sage grouse numbers have dropped 52% since 2016

The federal government decided in September 2015 not to list the sage-grouse as an endangered species. Since then, Idaho’s sage-grouse numbers have dropped 52%. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made that decision at a time when sage-grouse numbers were climbing in Idaho and other states. But following a 2016 population peak, the numbers have dropped annually in Idaho and other states, according to wildlife biologists. Whether this decline is part of a cyclical pattern or indicative of a more serious systemic problem is not yet known, but this three-year decrease could force state and federal wildlife and land managers to take a closer look at just how well sage-grouse are faring.

National: Donald Trump denied overruling Pence and other advisers on Camp David meeting with Taliban

President Donald Trump pushed back Monday on news reports that he overruled objections from Vice President Mike Pence and other advisers on a possible secret meeting with Taliban leaders at Camp David. Trump, who announced over the weekend that he had canceled the meeting, said he always thinks “it is good to meet and talk, but in this case I decided not to.” Trump said Saturday that he had canceled the meeting with Taliban leaders and was suspending Afghanistan peace negotiations after the group claimed responsibility for a car bomb last week that killed an American and 11 others. Pence and National Security Adviser John Bolton both objected to the Camp David meeting while State Department officials argued it could move parties closer to a peace deal to end the 18-year-old war in Afghanistan.
