Bengals Continue to Set School Records, Personal Bests at Wildcat Invite

Treyshon Malone and Hannah Bartz helped lead Idaho State track and field to victory at the 2019 Weber State Indoor Invitational in Ogden, Utah.

The Bengals finished the meet with ten first-place finishes and 18 total podium finishes.

“This meet puts us halfway through the season,” said Head Coach Hillary Merkley. “Championships for indoors is right around the corner. We have some really solid men and women who are some of the best to come through the program. We are lucky to have such a good group and we hope to continue to bring in more kids like them.”

Men’s Meet

Treyshon Malone highlighted the meet with his performance in the long jump. On his sixth attempt he jumped a record 7.66m (25′ 1.5″). This mark broke an ISU record set in 1998 by Stefan Von Campe and the record for the long jump at the Stromberg complex. It places him in sole possession of first place in the Big Sky and No. 14 in the NCAA.

In the 400m Malone again took first place running a personal best 48.55 placing him fifth place in the Big Sky. The men’s 4X400 relay team consisting of Kodee Vining, Markos Huerta, Jakota Brown and Treyshon Malone took second place running a 3:28.25.

Michael Dean won the 55m dash with a time of 6.31. This mark ties him for fourth fastest all-time.

Tanner Conner picked up his second win of the season in the hurdles, running the event with a time of 7.42.

In the throwing events, Trevor Jensen took third in the shot put throwing a distance of 16.04m (52′ 7.5″). Leo Finsterbusch placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 16.75nm (54′ 11.5”). Trevor Jensen and Keegan Luker followed in fourth and fifth.

Jessica SwannackWomen’s Meet

For the third week in a row, Jessica Swannack won the women’s pole vault. She vaulted 3.66m (12′ 0″) to win the meet. Brook Anger took third place with a vault of 3.51m (11′ 6.25″).

Hannah Bartz picked up her first wins of the year. In the 200m, she won with a final time of 26.34. In the triple jump, she recorded a personal best distance of 10.91m (35′ 9.5″). Sharissa Hollis came in second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.36m (34′ 0″).

In the throwing events, Taylor Clark got her second win of the year in the weight throw. She recorded a mark of 16.39m (53′ 9.25″). Madison Cicierski came in fourth with a distance of 15.82m (52″ 9.25″) and Skyla Liava’a took sixth throwing 14.96m (49′ 1′).

Ashley VanVleet-Sturgis brought home a pair of wins. In the high jump she jumped a height of 5.62m (18′ 5.25′). VanVleet-Sturgis then took first in the Long jump with a distance of 5.62 (18′ 5.25″) placing her eighth in the big sky. Hannah Bartz came in second with 5.45m (17′ 10.75″) and Brianna VanVleet took fourth with a distance of 5.36m (17′ 7″).

“The team had overall solid performances and we had some big improvements,” Merkley said. “By the end of the season we have potential to get a couple more personal bests in the books and hopefully we chase down some more records.”

Looking Ahead

The Idaho State men’s and women’s track and field teams head next to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Invite Feb. 1-2.

“We have a big meet in Boise next week,” Merkley Said. “It’s a nice facility and there will be some good competition for them. Some of our team haven’t seen that facility or the teams that will be there. It will be a good week for training because we have some time back in Holt. We are anxious to get to work on Monday.”
