The Idaho State women’s tennis team wrapped up its lone home tournament of the fall Sunday afternoon.
“I’m really proud of how the girls performed this weekend,” said Head Coach Gretchen Maloney. “After playing at Boise State they all had things that they wanted to work on and they all were very deliberate about doing that. Our doubles play was the highlight of the tournament because we ended up second, third and fourth and we were not seeded going into the draw of 16. We have a lot of seniors and they are starting to really play smart.”
Day 1
The Bengal women opened the tournament playing inside of Reed Gymnasium due to cold and rainy conditions.
The Orange and Black took it in stride though earning doubles wins on 1 with Megan Poe and Hristina Cvetkovic defeating Yuuna Ukita and McKenna Llyod of Weber State, 6-2. Alexandra Arkhipov and Angela Walker defeated Lauren Dunlap and Olivia Oosterbaan of Montana, battling to a final score of 7-6 (3-0). Madison Fenske and Melissa Coburn defeated Claudia Reguant and Alex Walker of Montana handily with a score of 6-1
The lone defeat of the day in doubles came when Cali Fuller and Megan Lombardi of Weber State defeated Adrienne Pavek and Viktoriia Pavlovets 6-1.
After a lunch break and the weather clearing up, the tournament was moved to to Capell Park for the remainder of the tournament.
In the singles competition there were three draws, an Orange, a Black and a Bengal draw.
In the Orange draw, day one started with Cvetkovic defeating Joana Baptista of Boise State, 7-6, 6-4.
Vanessa Timm of Boise State won a hard fought battle against Idaho State’s Poe 7-6 (3-0), 4-6, and 6-4. Hannah Jones of Utah State defeated Walker 6-1, 6-2
In the Black draw, Arkhipov opened the day defeating Frankie Trella of Boise State 6-2, 7-5.
Oosterbaan defeated Fenske 6-2, 6-2 and Dunlap defeated Coburn. The day ended with Sidnee Lavatai defeating Pavek 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bengal draw ended day one with Pavlovets defeating Reguant 0-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Day 2
Day two doubles started with a Bengal victory. Poe and Cvetkovic defeated Camryn Moortgat and Timm of Boise State 7-6 (5-0). The Bengals kept the momentum going with Arkhipov and Walker defeating Zara Ryan and Dekkers of Utah State 6-3. Fenske and Coburn rounded out the doubles quarterfinals wins defeating Morett-Salas and Pei-Hsuan Poe of Weber State 6-2.
The lone doubles loss came with Fuller and Lombardi defeating Pavek and Pavlovets 6-3.
In the Orange Draw quarterfinals, Cvetkovic defeated Ryan in three sets of 6-4, 6-7 (0-5), 10-6.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Hannah Jones of Utah State defeated Poe 6-1, 6-1. In the Orange Draw semifinals, Lucy Octave of Utah State defeated Cvetkovic 6-3-6-1.
In the consolation semi-finals, Jones defeated Walker 6-1, 6-2.
In the Black draw quarterfinals, Lombardi defeated Arkhipov 6-4, 3-6, 5-1.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Fenske defeated Mae McCutcheon through retirement. Coburn defeated Moortgat 6-0, 6-3, and Pavek advanced on a bye.
In the consolation semi-finals, Fenske defeated Trella 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 and Coburn advanced defeating teammate Pavek 6-1, 6-0.
In the Bengal Draw, Pavlovets defeated Cory Patton Lossner of Boise State 6-2, 6-0.
Day 3
The final day of tournament play saw multiple Bengal women in the final rounds of their brackets.
Doubles play opened with a semifinal match between Idaho State teammates Poe, Cvetkovic and Arkhipov, Walker. Poe and Cvetkovic advanced on the final defeating the pair 6-4.
In the other semi-final, Jones and Lavatai defeated Fenske and Coburn 6-1.
In the finals, Cvetkovic and Poe fell to Jones and Lavatai 6-2. In a third-place match between teammates Fenske, Coburn and Walker, Arkhipov. Fenske and Coburn won with a score of 6-4.
In the final day of the Orange Draw, Cvetkovic retired from her third-place match with Ukita.
In the Black draw consolation finals, Coburn defeated teammate Fenske in a hard fought 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 match.
In the final day of the Bengal draw, Lloyd defeated Pavlovets 6-4, 6-4.
The Bengals also participated in some extra matches at the end of the tournament.
Goheen defeated Arkhipov 8-5. Dunlap defeated Pavek 8-3 and Ukita defeated Poe 8-1.
“Going forward I would like to see us continue to be aggressive in doubles and in the point as soon as possible,” said Maloney. “I would also like us to continue to work on our offense and singles when we get a short ball to put it away.”
Looking Ahead
The Orange and Black wrap up their fall season as they head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Las Vegas Regionals next month on Oct. 22-26.
