AVOIDING THE REGISTRATION NIGHTMARE

With registration for the fall 2014 semester at ISU right around the corner, there are multiple considerations for students to keep in mind.

Possibly the most noticeable change to registration this year will be the catalog moving from print to fully online.

The hope is that the online catalog will be a seamless transition for ISU.

“It has always been the case that the online version represented the most updated version,” said Nancy Goodman of Central Academic Advising.

“We recommend that students print off the general education section and the section of your major [from the online catalog],” she continued.

Each time a student prepares to register for classes, planning ahead for future semesters can be beneficial for multiple reasons.

“Another thing with the catalog to be aware of is not all classes are available each semester, which is why it is important to have the schedule mapped out,” said Goodman.

Meeting with an adviser can be a big help when it comes to creating a schedule each registration period that works best for you.

The adviser can help to ensure that some mistakes are avoided, such as registering for a course in on a different campus, such as in Meridian or Idaho Falls, or forgetting to sign up for a course that is only offered every two years.

Once a student has decided on a major, the process of declaring that major and being assigned an adviser should begin.

“When declaring your major, go to the department of that major to declare. Mention that you want to be assigned an academic adviser and make sure you are declaring your catalog year,” said Goodman.

For students who have kept all of the important registration considerations in mind, the process can be expedited.

“You can look at your schedule beforehand and can lay out classes you want,” said Goodman.

“Registration can be easy if you’ve met with an adviser and planned out which classes you want to take,” she said.

The course schedule for the fall 2014 semester is available online now to allow students to plan out their schedules in advance of registration opening.

Registration opens April 14 on BengalWeb for seniors with 90 or more credits, graduate students, pharmacy and post-baccalaureate students.

Juniors with 58-89 credits can begin registering on April 16.

Sophomores with 26-57 credits get started on April 18.

For freshmen and non-degree seeking students with under 25 credits, the registration process starts on April 21.

For all credit levels, registration will begin at 12:01 a.m. on the days listed above.
