Kiwi Cradle, an acidic, sugary, dose of energy, and Big Belly, a knock-off banana smoothie.

Have you ever wanted to try one of these infamous mocktails? Do you have burning questions for me, the Mocktail Master? Or do you simply just like free sugary drinks? Well, you’re in luck – on April 26th from 7-9 p.m. at the Quad Lounge in the SUB, I will be making mocktails as part of an event for the Wellness Center. Come play some board games and enjoy some drinks!

Kiwi Cradle

A substitution for caffeine.

2 kiwis, peeled and cut into cubes (reserve 1 slice for garnish)

2 ounces lemonade

4 ounces lemon-lime soda

Puree the kiwi in a blender. Add the lemonade and lemon-lime soda. Blend until smooth. Serve immediately, garnished with a fresh kiwi slice.

This recipe comes from Margarita Mama by Alyssa Gusenoff. I added the kiwi and lemonade to the blender and then pureed them. I wouldn’t recommend adding soda to a blender – it can cause a lot of foam – so I added the lemon-lime soda last, and only gave it a quick spin. I stirred it again and poured it out. I’d recommend shot glasses for this one!

Wow, talk about a dose of energy! It’s acidic, sugary, and most of all, ready to wake you up! Best had after a long night. (Speaking of, reminds me of my signature wake-up abomination— I mean “drink.” Freshly carbonated water, 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, and salt. Makes my eyes water just thinking about it.)

Big Belly

If you drink enough of these, your belly will get big too.

1 cup vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt

½  banana

1 tablespoon maple syrup

¼ cup pineapple juice

¼ cup ice

Place all the ingredients in a blender and pulse on medium speed until the banana is pureed and the ingredients are well blended. Serve immediately.

This is also a recipe from Margarita Mama. I cut up my banana (I would use a whole banana instead of a half) and added my ice cream, juice, ice, and maple syrup to the blender. Warning! I would not add a tablespoon of maple syrup. If you must add it, add a teaspoon, or substitute for brown sugar. Otherwise, it becomes very overpowering. A quick blend, and voila!

Look, I’ve had a lot of banana smoothies over the years. You could call me a connoisseur of banana smoothies. A banana smoothie sommelier, even. This… did not live up to the full potential of what a banana smoothie could be. Don’t bother.
