Managing Pocatello’s Winters: A Guide

Whether you’re new to town or have been a local for several years, most of us at one point or another have experienced how harsh winters here in town can be. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you navigate the upcoming harsh conditions, so you can better enjoy the holiday season:

  1. Purchase a good pair of shoes. Snow often has risen at quick and unexpected levels, causing the work of plows and salt to vanish quickly. Many times a year you’ll find yourself walking on sidewalks entirely made of ice or trudging through a foot or more of snow. Investing in a shoe such as waterproof Uggs, snow boots, or other durable footwear will help you immensely in the long run.
  2. Avoid commuting on side roads. In the height of winter, plows often overlook the smaller roads and alleyways to focus on keeping main roads in top shape. If you live in a neighborhood off campus that doesn’t receive much traffic, take extra precautions when leaving the house.
  3. Own an ice scraper. This is crucial. In the 2023 season alone, Pocatello has received a foot of snow. Having one of these on hand and in your car is necessary in order to be able to leave the house on those snowy or icy days. Storefronts such as Amazon or Walmart have several options.
  4. Create a warmer wardrobe. Sweatshirts, coats, hoodies, sweatpants, and a good pair of denim all can help in reducing side effects that come in handy with the low temperatures. If you’re noticing you have mostly warmer-weather staples in your closet, try searching at some local thrift stores for cozier options
  5. Do things that make you happy. While this is a good tip for year-round, seasonal depression can become pretty overwhelming for many who don’t work well in the more overcast, snowy months. Maintaining your happiness is crucial in getting through these rough patches. Here are some ideas for boosting your serotonin levels
    • Making hot drinks/meals, such as soup or hot cocoa.
    • Invest in a Vitamin D light. Lots of us are affected by the long months without much sun, and buying a lamp that recreates the boost the sun gives can really help in the longer weeks.
    • Spend time with loved ones. Making plans with friends and family this time of year can be extra beneficial.
    • Pick up an indoor hobby. Crocheting, crafting, painting, and reading, among others, are all things that can boost serotonin. Find something you enjoy and stick to it!
