OGDEN, Utah – The Idaho State women’s tennis team completed its second fall tournament over the weekend at the Weber State Fall Invitational, hosted by Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Louise-Mare Botes and Huibre-Mare Botes led the Bengals in singles play, advancing to the championship match and semifinal match respectively.
In singles play, Louise-Mare Botes opened the weekend with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mikala Lowrance of Southern Utah, then followed it up with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Weber State’s Tereza Pilzova to advance to the semifinals of the main draw. Louise-Mare bested Southern Utah’s Eira Tobrand 6-2, 6-2 in the semis to advance to the title match, but fell to Weber State’s Caitlin Herb 6-3, 6-1.
Huibre-Mare Botes opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 over Southern Utah’s Charity Sagiao followed by a quarterfinal victory over SUU’s Ghita Nassik. Botes fell to eventual champion Herb 6-0, 7-5 in the semifinals of the singles main draw.
In the singles back draw, Kristen Newell picked up a quarterfinal victory over WSU’s Emily Tanner 6-0, 6-4 but fell to the Wildcats’ McKenna Lloyd 7-6(5), 6-2. Andrea Osborn and Madison Fenske faced-off in the quarterfinals of the back draw, with Fenske earning the 6-3, 6-4 win to advance to the semifinals. Fenske fell to Morgan Dickason of Weber State 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
In doubles play, the Botes sisters teamed up to defeat WSU’s Devi Hasan and Emily Tanner 8-0 to advance to the semifinals of the main draw, but they fell to Southern Utah’s Lowrance/Sagiao 6-4. Melissa Coburn and Megan Poe also picked up a doubles win with a 8-6 victory over WSU’s Tereza Pilzova and Morgan Dickason in the round of 16, but they fell to SUU’s Daniela Cozzi and Ghita Nassik 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles back draw, Walker and Fenske teamed up to defeat WSU’s Pilzova/Dickason 8-6 in the consolation semifinals but fell to Southern Utah’s Martin/de Enrique Schmidt in a 8-7(6) battle.
Idaho State hits the road for the ITA Regionals, hosted by the University of Utah Oct. 11-15 in Salt Lake City.
