What you missed at ASISU

ASISU logoWith a new school year comes both a new ASISU agenda and a new crop of ASISU Senators ready to make a difference. As Alison Dixon, a sophomore Arts & Letters Senator said, “We are all excited for this year.”
Last year’s ASISU Senate instigated the popular Bengal Wednesdays, as well as making the preliminary decisions to declare Idaho State University a smoke-free campus. Dixon went on to say that students can expect similar popular and pro-active acts from this year’s ASISU team.
“We have a lot of plans for ASISU this year,” Dixon said, “and are excited to put them into action.”
The first meeting of the Senate was held Wednesday, Aug. 29, and while the majority of what was accomplished was a preface for later action, the groundwork was set for an exemplary year.
Several bills and resolutions were brought before the Senate, although only one has been passed at this time. Resolution 510, sponsored by Senator Robert Miklos of the College of Science and Engineering, argued that the student body support the renovation and replacement of the “I” symbol found on Red Hill with an interlocking “I” and “S” to represent the current incarnation of this school as a state university.
The current “I”, according to the report, was originally intended to symbolize the school when it was merely the University of Idaho – Southern Branch, and therefore no longer adequately represents the school as a whole. The senate voted to pass this resolution.
Bill 397, written by Matt Bloxham, ASISU president, and sponsored by Senator Taylor Jensen of the College of Business, voted to incorporate the Pledge of Allegiance into every student senate meeting. The Senate intends to insert the Pledge between the roll call and the approval of the minutes in every meeting. Thus far, no decision has been reached on this bill, and it remains one of the bills tabled.
Thus far, the 2012 ASISU promises to be a senate committed to both action and the betterment of Idaho State University at large. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Building and all students are welcome to attend.
