TRACK, FIELD AND MIKA

For many students, going to school is a full-time job. Despite this, many  add sports and other extra-curricular activities to their busy schedules.

In addition to school and track, Tracy Gordon is also a member of a community service group called MIKA, which has many diverse group members. This group participates in various volunteering projects throughout the community. Gordon has been a member of MIKA for three years.

Recently with MIKA, Gordon has helped clean a local church, volunteered at the Veterans’ Center in the Pond Student Union Building, during the volunteer process they organized the veteran’s suits and provided them interview clothes. They have also helped at the Pocatello Dog Shelter, and the food bank.

“It makes me feel good,” Gordon said. “Just to know that I’m doing something, giving back, or helping give back. It’s just a good feeling.”

Gordon was named Top Field Athlete of the Year, last year for the ISU’s track team. This is her fourth year at ISU, and she is majoring in Psychology.

A Mountain Home native, Gordon has been competing in track since her freshman year of high school and was grateful for the opportunity to continue her career in college.

“I’m blessed with opportunity, to continue to do what I love for four more years after high school,” Gordon said.

Gordon started her track career in high school by competing in the 100 and 200-meter, long jump, and relays.

When she came to ISU, she started as a sprinter and jumper, but also participated in the heptathlon for two and a half years. Currently, high jump is the only event she competes in.

But in high school, Gordon did not compete in the high jump.

After competing in the heptathlon, which includes the high jump, in college she learned she that she had a niche for the high jump.

Over the course of her career, she has experienced no  serious injuries and was able to begin competing at ISU her freshman year without having to redshirt.

During last year’s outdoor season, she competed in six meets for ISU. Tracy placed 9th in the high jump and 10th in the long jump during the UNLV Invitational.

At the UVU Collegiate Invitational, she aided the 400-meter relay team to a 4th place finish and placed 10th in the high jump.

During the BYU Robison Invitational, she matched her personal-record in the high jump to claim 9th at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

“It’s just been a blessing,” said Gordon. “Not a lot of people get the opportunity to continue their sport or track careers.”
