Thumbs up: Beating Idaho

For the first time since 1995 (longer than I have been alive) ISU beat Idaho, 62-28. An absolute annihilation of its state rival in the form of a nice, warm welcoming back to the Big Sky. It was a game ISU almost had to have to renew its rivalry with Idaho, as the two teams had not met since 2008 and had not met at Holt Arena since 1997. Quarterback Tanner Gueller set a school record for passing touchdowns in a single game (8)—yeah, you read that right—and got a helmet sticker from ESPN’s Joey Galloway. My only question is why ESPN didn’t already have an ISU helmet? Didn’t Merril Hoge work there?

Thumbs up: Midterms are over

Midterms is the second worst week of the semester (which is why we don’t print). When it’s over, it feels like finishing a tough set of squats at the gym. Papers, projects, tests, we get it all during midterms. Now, we can cruise to Finals, kinda. Either that or stop going to class when we get those assignments and tests back. Whatever floats your boat, really.

Thumbs up: Coffee

Where would we be as a society without coffee? I mean, seriously, coffee is a legalized drug that millions of Americans drink multiple cups of every day. It can make up for lost sleep, extend your day if you have a bunch of midterm papers to write, or just be a simple pick-me-up on an overcast and rainy day. Coffee is so cool that my body reminds me when I forget to consume this glorious beverage. There’s even a name for it. It’s called a caffeine withdrawal headache. My roommate, who is a pharmacy major, even said so.

Thumbs down: Graduation fees

I got charged 20 bucks when I applied to graduate. Why does it cost $20 to graduate? Was my tuition not enough? Were my student fees not enough? I cannot graduate unless I give ISU my $20 “graduation fee.” I spent three and a half years working towards my degree where I then can go represent ISU in the community and ISU’s final “thank you” is a $20 graduation fee.  Bury this thing in tuition or something. Don’t flaunt your money-grabbing techniques in front of my nose.

Thumbs down: Day playoff games

Game 5 of the NLCS between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers is set to start at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. The game is IN LOS ANGELES and it is starting at 2 p.m. on a WEDNESDAY. This is why baseball is losing fans. Start the playoff games when people can, you know, watch. The league championship series is starting at 2 p.m., give me a break. The 162-game schedule is one thing, the day games during the division series are another, but you have to put your championship series in primetime. Go every other day in each league and slap those things with an 8 p.m. Eastern start time.

Thumbs down: No respect in the polls

After the Idaho game, ISU was left out of the FCS top 25. I’m not sure what else ISU has to do. ISU beat a ranked team on the road, they were unbeaten in conference play and its only loss was to Cal, who was nationally ranked at one point. Regardless of how the UC Davis game turned out, ISU should have been ranked after the Idaho game. ISU is getting no respect in the polls. Previous history should have no impact on this year’s polls.
