Soccer takes down Idaho, 2-1, on senior day

The Idaho State soccer team took down the Idaho Vandals 2-1 in double overtime on Senior Day, Oct. 13, on Davis Field.

Senior Makena Bambei gave the Bengals an early lead with a goal at 2:22 assisted by junior Rachel Brownell. The goal was her third of the season tying her with fellow seniors Michaela Didericksen and Jazmin Lopez for the team’s leading scorer.

The Bengals had six shots with four on goal in the first half against the Vandal’s eight shots and one on goal.

The Vandals tied the score 1-1 early in the second half at 49:15. The rest of the half remained scoreless bringing the match into overtime.

Idaho State out-shot Idaho in the second half 10-6 with four on goal against their three on goal.

Karlin Wurlitzer scored the game-winning goal off a penalty kick in double overtime to give the Idaho State their first conference win.

The game-winning PK was Wurlitzer’s second of the season.

Idaho State out-shot Idaho 22-16 with a total of ten shots on goal. The Bengals tied their season-high of 22 shots in the match.

Senior Michaela Didericksen recorded five shots for three on goal, senior Makena Bambei recorded six shots with two on goal, senior Jazmin Lopez recorded three shots, senior Natasha Camacho-Bier recorded two shots, and senior Rachel Brownell recorded one shot on goal and one assist.

Bambei now has 167 shots in her career and is 11 shots shy of becoming ISU’s All-Time shot leader behind Amanda Ellsworth (2011-14) with 177 career shots.

With three saves in the match, senior goalkeeper Katie Hogarth has 103 saves on the season, the second All-Time single-season saves.

Idaho State continues conference play on the road next week against Weber State on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. (MST) in Ogden, Utah.
