POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team fell to visiting Idaho 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Davis Field in the inaugural Battle of the Domes rivalry series.
Idaho State (3-14-0, 2-7-0 BSC) controlled the first half, registering 10 shots to the Vandals’ eight and including two shots on goal. The Bengals took the early lead in the 19th minute when Brooke Kortekaas found Lauren McGahie for the go-ahead score. McGahie connected for a shot just outside the box from right field and sent a rocket past UI’s goalkeeper to the top left for her first career goal.
The Bengals prevented Idaho (7-9-2, 3-5-1 BSC) from scoring in the first half and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
“The first half was tremendous,” Head Coach Allison Gibson said. “We did everything right I thought in the first half and got a great goal.”
Coming out of the break, the Vandals took control, outshooting the Bengals 10-4 in the second half. Idaho’s Kelly Dopke tied things up with a goal in the 57th minute, and 20 minutes later the Vandals scored again to take a 2-1 lead. Idaho State was unable to score the equalizer, and the Vandals held on for the win.
“Soccer is such a weird game in that someone else can take off a million moments and we can’t capitalize, but we take off one moment, especially in a game like that, [and they capitalize],” Gibson said. “We played really well for the majority of the game, and to take one moment off and we get punished for it. It’s been that kind of unfortunate luck for us, and I think it’s a matter of staying the process and keep doing everything that we can to turn the tides as soon as possible.”
Idaho State will host Weber State Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. at Davis Field in its final game of the 2017 season.
