Hundreds of Pocatello community members gathered to march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 21.
The march began at 1 p.m. at Holt Arena and ended at the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center, where ISU President Kevin Satterlee spoke and graduate student Olivia Ngadjui delivered the keynote address. Transportation and refreshments were provided for those who attended the event.
The annual march is sponsored by the Idaho State University Diversity Resource Center, as well as other involvement groups throughout the community.
The purpose of the march was to come together as a community to remember Dr. King and the impact he had on the world.
In 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to organize the first major protest of the African-American civil rights movement. He chose to lead with peace, which paved the way for peaceful protests for years to follow. Despite being faced with multiple challenges such as violence, King and his followers were determined to push forward.
The March on Washington, a massive march for jobs and freedom, was held on August 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C. This is considered one of the most popular events attended by Dr. King that ended with his historic “I have a dream” speech.
The march was convened to advocate for the civil rights of African-Americans and had over 200,000 people there in support of Dr. King.
During the march held Monday, people made sure King’s memory wasn’t forgotten. Some held signs, while others chanted words of support.
