Idaho State University sent out an alert notification on Feb. 19 warning the student body of a “shooting” shortly after Pocatello police responded to the call in the area of South 5th Avenue and East Humbolt Street, right across from the campus.
The first call reported a group of five to six men battering another man behind Taco Bell. Then dispatch received a second call from a different person reporting that they heard a single gunshot in the area.
The confrontation ended in the alley behind the nearby River of Life Church where officers found a magazine for a handgun and a single spent shell casing. The Idaho State Journal reported that authorities believe the shot was fired into the pavement.
Everyone involved in the confrontation had fled the scene by the time officers arrived and it’s believed that no one was injured. Once on the scene, police canvassed the neighborhood but couldn’t find any eyewitnesses to the shot or the men involved.
ISU Public Safety did not respond to the scene as the reports were off-campus. However, they called in extra security officers to secure the campus and staged them at all the open venues, including one at the Pond Student Union Building and one at the Eli M. Oboler Library.
Public Safety also had more requests for safety escorts from students, which they were able to accommodate because of the extra officers.
Public Safety did not witness any of the people involved fleeing onto the ISU campus.
