The Bengal newspaper is pleased to announce that we have multiple job positions open for the 2013-2014 school year.
The deadline for all jobs and supplemental materials is Friday, April 19, by 5 p.m.
Applications will be available in The Bengal newspaper office (located in the Hypostyle) and the Pond Student Union Information Desk.
Job descriptions for each job currently available are briefly explained below.
News Editor
This person is responsible for the content and appearance of the News section in each issue, coordinating reporters and assigning stories and photos. They are also responsible for editing all stories in the section. Flexible hours. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style is a plus.
Sports Editor
This person is responsible for the content and appearance of the Sports section in each issue, coordinating reporters, and assigning photos. They are also responsible for editing all stories in the section. Flexible hours. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style is a plus.
Photographic Editor
We are seeking a responsible person with good photography skills. This person is responsible for the content and appearance of all photos in each issue. Please submit samples of your work. Will be responsible for assigning photographers to take, edit, and turn in photos. A good working knowledge of photography and quality photography techniques are a must. Flexible hours but must be available to take on and off campus photos throughout the week when the event occurs.
Life Editor
This person is responsible for the content and appearance of the Life section in each issue, coordinating writers, and assigning photos. They are also responsible for editing all stories in the section. Flexible hours. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style is a plus.
Copy Editor
We are seeking a responsible person with good writing and editing skills for the position of Copy Editor. This person will work closely with other editors to produce a newspaper free from misspellings, incorrect grammar or Associated Press (AP) usage, and libel. The Copy Editor is responsible for making sure all pages in the newspaper have been critically copy edited before the final print. Flexible hours. Knowledge of AP style is a plus.
Online Editor
This person is responsible for making weekly updates to our Internet home page (isubengal.com). The web page is updated each week (and throughout the week as necessary) with the text content from the current issue and an online archive of issues is maintained. This person is also responsible for maintaining various social networking sites including the Facebook “Like” page and Twitter account. Knowledge of WordPress is a plus.
Advertising Manager
This person is responsible for keeping contact with regular advertisers, soliciting ads for commission, assisting in the design and layout of ads as well as layout and content of all ads and the classifieds section. Commission provides compensation. Flexible hours.
Advertising Representative
We are seeking responsible people with good sales skills that are willing to become part of The Bengal team. Responsibilities include making sales calls to local businesses and maintaining positive business contacts between the community and the campus. Commission provides compensation. Flexible hours.
Production Editor
We are seeking someone who is willing to work as a computer layout operator and/or ad designer. Applicants should have extensive computer experience. Good working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) is preferred and a plus. Must be detailed orientated, have a commitment to quality, work well under deadline pressure, work closely with editors, and be able to learn new skills. Flexible hours but must be available during production (TBD). Shadowing current Production Editor for remainder of semester preferred.
Production Assistant/Ad Designer
Applicants should have extensive computer experience. Good working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) is preferred and a plus. Must be detailed orientated, have a commitment to quality, work well under deadline pressure, work closely with Ad Manager and Production Editor, and be able to learn new skills. Flexible hours but must be available during production.
Staff Photographer
We are seeking responsible people with excellent photography skills. Please submit samples of your work. Photographers will be responsible for taking pictures of people or events assigned to them by the Photo Editor and section editors. Flexible hours but must be available to take on and off campus photos throughout the week.
Staff Writer
We are seeking responsible people with good writing skills and willingness to research story topics. Must be able to attend events, interview people of interest, and submit quality stories by deadlines given to them by section editors. Must also be able to write under deadline pressure at times. Please submit samples of your work. Flexible hours. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style is a plus.
Distribution Manager
Must be able to distribute the newspaper at the pre-determined time each week (Wednesday mornings). Will be in charge of working with other distribution team members to make sure the newspaper is distributed correctly and in a timely fashion each week. Must be able to lift and carry newspaper bundles (up to 10 pounds).
Distribution Team Member
Must be able to distribute the newspaper at the pre-determined time each week (Wednesday mornings). We will accept people that have a car (for off-campus or distant locations) as well as students that can distribute around campus on foot and at special ISU events as well. Must be able to lift and carry newspaper bundles (up to 10 pounds).
