While full of the small-town appeal that accompanies Pocatello, Idaho State University also offers an active campus with plenty of opportunities to have a good time.
Activities like rock wall climbing, bowling and movies are free to students and offer ways to stay busy during downtime.
Free food is a convenient part of campus life, particularly at the beginning of the semester and during midterms and finals. Barbecues are frequently held on the Hutchinson Quadrangle and meals accompany many departmental and club events.
Freshman Paige Newland found the free food around campus during the first weeks of school helpful.
“It make the transition into college easier,” she said.
For students looking to stay fit and focused, Reed Gym and the Student Recreation Center are the places to attend free exercise classes or climb ISU’s indoor rock wall.
“There are really good opportunities to stay healthy on campus,” said Newland.
Student productions like “RENT” and films like the “The Avengers” have been shown on campus free for students in the Performing Arts Center and the Bengal Theater. There are frequently free recitals on campus for students and art exhibits in the Fine Arts building, Rendezvous Complex and Pond Student Union Building. The event calendar on the ISU website is a great way to stay updated on art and other events around campus.
One way to participate on campus and show school spirit is dressing up for Bengal Wednesday. Just wearing ISU gear offers students the chance to win prizes when they’re spotted representing orange and black.
“The Bengal” newspaper is released every Wednesday. Frequently, prizes are offered for being caught reading the Bengal or answering questions about campus. The newspaper also offers a way to stay informed about upcoming events.
“I enjoy reading ‘The Bengal’ when my roommate doesn’t steal it first,” said Newland.
