Local: The city of Chubbuck honored two snowplow drivers for saving a man’s life

In what Mayor Kevin England called a miracle, on Jan. 18, two City of Chubbuck snow plow drivers saved the life of a local man. The city honored the drivers, Ryan Sullivan and Terry Udy. The city’s Facebook page read that they were honored for being able to “identify immediate need, and take swift action that contributed to saving the life of a member of our Community.” The two found a man lying on the sidewalk during a snowstorm. They called 911 immediately and stayed with him until the ambulance was there to take him to further treatment.

Regional: Preston lost to Idaho Falls in a 4A state title game

Preston took home the 4A state runner-up trophy on March 2 after losing to Idaho Falls in overtime with a score of 66-57. Preston was the three-time defending 4A state champion, but that came to an end with Idaho Falls winning its first title since 1988. “It’s hard bringing home the second-place trophy,” Preston’s Riley Parker said. “We were hoping for first, but it’s still an honor finishing second.”

Statewide: Boise State released the five finalists to be its next president

The Idaho State Board of Education sent out a news release on Sunday with the five finalists to replace Bob Kustra, the last president of Boise State University. Here are the finalists:

▪ Susan E. Borrego, chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint. Borrego, who will visit BSU on Monday, graduated from Idaho’s Northwest Nazarene University with a bachelor of arts degree and later worked there for seven years.

▪ Andrew Marcus, professor of geography and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon. Marcus will visit Boise on Tuesday.

▪ Marlene Tromp, provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of California-Santa Cruz. Tromp is scheduled to visit Boise State on Wednesday.

▪ Darren M. Dawson, dean of the College of Engineering at Kansas State University. Dawson will be at Boise State on Thursday.

▪ Edward Seidel, vice president for economic development and innovation for the University of Illinois system. Seidel’s campus visit will take place on Friday.

National: The Senate has the votes to overturn Trump’s emergency declaration

Republican Kentucky senator Rand Paul signaled support for blocking the president’s emergency declaration at the Southern Kentucky Lincoln Day Dinner and it’s now confirmed that he’ll be voting with Senate Democrats to end the declaration. “We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing,” Paul said in his speech. With Paul’s vote, the Democrats have enough votes to block the declaration. The President has veto power against the motion, but the rebuke from the Senate will likely be used to build the case of the plaintiff in the multiple lawsuits filed over the declaration.

International: Colombian president said Nicolás Maduro will be out of power soon

Colombian president Iván Duque said on March 3 that Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s “days in power are about to end” because of growing international and domestic pressure. “Maduro is facing his last days, whether that’s one month or two, or one week, or one day,” Duque said. This comes after an increase in tensions between European powers and the United States against Maduro’s government after his re-election, which has been criticized as a flawed and rigged election.
