Local: Seven people have been arrested for the shooting and robbery in Chubbuck

Local law enforcement officials have arrested seven people in the aftermath of the Chubbuck shooting and robbery. The shooting took place on Thursday at a Chubbuck home that left one man wounded at the scene. The latest to be arrested were announced Sunday by the Chubbuck police, McKinzee Kirkham of Inkom, and Sage Siler of Pocatello. The alleged shooter Kane Simons, 20, of Pocatello has now also been charged with robbery. More were arrested during the weekend after the shooting. Kirkham, Siler and Simons all face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Regional: Shelley High School students left class to help the local fire department.

Three classes of Shelley High School students skipped their afternoon classes to assist the Shelley Fire Department fill hundreds of sandbags for the community on Friday. The sandbags went to community members whose homes, shops and property are flooding due to intermittent warm weather southeast Idaho is experiencing. Many of the community members were surprised by the supply of sandbags and were grateful for the student body’s efforts.

Statewide: Three southwest Idaho men have made national news after being charged with allegedly raping an 18-year-old women

Three Boise men, Nineteen-year-old Elias Lupango, 18-year-old Rashidi Mulanga and 18-year-old Swedi Iyombelo have been arrested and charged in 4th District Court for allegedly raping an 18-year-old women and 16-year-old was also taken into custody. The case made national news when Fox News reported on it. Allegedly, the girl was going to meet one of the men and initially consented to sex but then told him to stop. Police say the other defendents then took turns raping her. The defendants say the accusations are false.

National: The president has declared a state of emergency at the southern border

President Trump on Friday declared a national emergency at the southern border, an idea that he had played with for weeks and backed off of. This decision averts another government shutdown and comes in response to the deal offered by the appointed bipartisan group of lawmakers of $1.375 billion in wall funding. This move will possible give the president access to $8 billion in wall funding. Multiple entities have already filed lawsuits against the administration and the president himself said that those challenges would likely go to the supreme court. Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said they would fight the “power grab by a disappointed president” in Congress and in the courts.

International: Marco Rubio visits Columbia and says aid will get through to Venezuelans

Marco Rubio went to the Columbia-Venezuela border to meet with U.S. and opposition party officials and said on CNN’s “Newsroom” that aid will get through with or without the help of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro. On Saturday, humanitarian aid from the U.S. arrived at the border, but Maduro has said, “we are not beggars” and blocked a bridge connecting Columbia and Venezuela where aid was supposed to arrive. This comes after the U.S. and european powers said they wouldn’t recognize Maduro as the countries leader. The United States upped sanctions against Venezuela and said they recognize Juan Guaidó, head of the National Assembly as the country’s’ leader.
