The Big Sky Conference announced today that it has postponed fall sports until spring, impacting women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country at Idaho State University. Spring schedules, as well as details about how Idaho State University will proceed with fall training and conditioning, will be released as soon as they are available.
The Big Sky Conference President’s Council also made the decision to cancel fall non-championship segment competition in tennis, golf, and softball. Today’s announcement follows last week’s decision to postpone football until the spring.
“Our first priority in this decision is to protect and promote the health and well-being of our student athletes and the entire Bengal community,” said University President Kevin Satterlee. “While this decision is very difficult and disappointing for our athletes and fans, we are absolutely confident that it is the right thing to do.”
“I know that our student athletes are disappointed on many levels,” said Athletic Director Pauline Thiros, “This is the right decision for their health and safety, and to preserve a meaningful competition experience for them. We are committed to providing the best environment for them to thrive academically, mentally and physically in the months to come. The Bengals are going to use the fall to get better in every way. I am extremely proud of the resilience and determination I am seeing demonstrated by our student athletes and staff.”
Big Sky institutions may continue with permissible athletics activities at their discretion while abiding by NCAA legislation, campus policies, and local and state health regulations. Idaho State student-athletes will continue to have permissible access to facilities, instruction, and training opportunities throughout the fall season. All COVID-19 protocols and precautions will remain in effect, and the University will continue to monitor the situation and adjust, as needed, in the interest of the health and safety of student-athletes and the campus community
