Current Associated Students of Idaho State University (ASISU) President Matt Bloxham announced his 2014 candidacy for District 29 of the Idaho State Legislature on Wednesday, March 19, in front of the Pond Student Union Building (PSUB).
Bloxham is presently pursuing his Master of Business daministration degree during his final term as ASISU president.
The 2004 graduate of Blackfoot High School served two years as ASISU president, along with another year as a senator.
He said he hopes to take the experience gained from his time in student government into any future roles.
“I’ve strived to help make ISU a better place to go to,” said Bloxham.
A key focus area for Bloxham will be continuing to have a large presence in the community.
“You know me as a member of the community, and I will continue to be as active as ever,” he said.
Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad was on hand to make the announcement of Bloxham running for the position.
“Matt has been a great ASISU president,” said Blad. “He has worked hard. I’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with him over the last three-and-a-half years and seen all of the things that he has done here at ISU.”
Bloxham will be running for the Idaho House of Representatives Seat A for the 29th District.
“I’m looking forward to representing Pocatello District 29 in the race in November,” said Bloxham. “I’m looking forward to providing this community with the strong leadership that it needs and deserves.”
“Pocatello doesn’t need tired leadership,” he added. “Pocatello deserves strong new leadership and that is what I am going to give them.”
The 2014 race for the Idaho House of Representatives Seat A for the 29th District will be between democrat Marcus Nye and the republican Bloxham.
Whoever takes the position will be replacing Carolyn Meline who will not be seeking re-election this year.
In 2012, Meline won the election over republican candidate Dave Bowen.
Bloxham’s successor as 2014/2015 ASISU president will be Kyle Son, who, along with Taylor Tingey earned the executive branch positions by a tally of 570 votes to the 353 of Tynan O’Neil and Zara Sivertsen.
Both Son and Tingey are from southeastern Idaho. Son went to Century High School, while Tingey graduated from Highland High School.
