On May 1, 1976 Richard Graves opened his very own record shop. Forty years later, that shop is going strong selling vinyl records and turning old VCR tapes into DVDs.

Graves has always loved music and eventually was able to open up a branch of the Budget Tapes and Records store just a few blocks from campus down 5th Street.

“I was an avid music fan, I really enjoyed music a lot,” Graves said. “I spent a lot of time browsing in music stores. I became interested and managed to get it together and we opened here in Pocatello.”

Since the era of music is and has been moving into the digital age, Graves does a lot of business in transforming older audio recordings to a digital format. Nevertheless, he still retains his love for the sound of vinyl.

Record 1“CDs are more convenient for in the car and things like that but I still think vinyl has the nicest sound,” Graves said.

Even though digital CDs may be easier to carry around, Graves still maintains that a vinyl record has a warmer, more natural sound.

He explained that the sound difference can be seen in the sound waves that each format produces. Vinyl records have a smoother, more consistent movement in their sound waves whereas CDs have a choppier, more abrupt pattern to their sound waves.

In the last several years, vinyl has been making a comeback. It has become a hipster thing for people to listen to them and for artists to produce them.

“The main reason I think vinyl has comeback is the younger generation have kind of discovered vinyl now,” Graves said.

With this trend, Graves has had an increase in business and is grateful that the new generations appreciates and are preserving vinyl.
