The premiere episode of the student-produced television show “The Portneuf Prowler” aired on Channel 12 on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 pm. The episode will air once more on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 9:30 pm.
The Portneuf Prowler is the result of the initiative of Mass Comm 4450 — Television Workshop.
Tom Hallaq, an assistant professor in the Mass Comm department, describes the class as an opportunity for students to get “real world experience in producing, reporting and directing television programming.”
The students of this 4400-level class are involved in every aspect of the production.
This class has existed for several years but this is the first year that the students have produced their own television show independently.
In past years, according to Hallaq, students have helped produce “Idaho State of Mind” in conjuncture with the Idaho State University Marketing and Communications department.
“Idaho State of Mind” is geared towards virtually all Idaho residents. Recent episode topics include archaeology, baby boomers and sexual assault.
“The Portneuf Prowler” is focused primarily upon events occurring in Pocatello and the Portneuf Valley at large.
Hallaq comments, “The program will discuss a wide variety of activities and events available throughout the Portneuf Valley — primarily targeted towards ISU students but not exclusive of that audience. Some examples include highlights of ASISU, SAB and UPC scheduled events, ISU athletics, local movies, plays, concerts and businesses. The program also includes a featured musical artist each week.”
Some attention has already been drawn to the show by way of its interesting name. Hallaq is unsure of the exact intended meaning of the name but ventures, “I think it refers to prowling around town to see what is going on.”
According to various students, the name was ultimately decided by a vote. Other possible titles were “What’s Up, Poky?” and “What’s Happening Pocatello.” All of the names in the running were the products of student creativity.
Ultimately, students hope to “inform the people of the Portneuf Valley about the many activities and offer options to combat the ‘there’s nothing to do here’ attitude,” says Hallaq.
Secondarily, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience as well as adding to their portfolios.
The Portneuf Prowler will air every Wednesday at 9:30 pm on Vision 12 — Local Access cable in Pocatello.
