Students in Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (S.H.E.P.E.R.D.S) Club

S.H.E.P.E.R.D.S.The S.H.E.P.E.R.D.S Club at Idaho State University is one of the most active clubs on campus with a large number of members.

According to club president Travis Martin, the club gives students a great opportunity to network, build resumes and participate in various types of service activities.

“[My experience with the club] has been very busy,” Martin explained. “We want to be involved in everything we can and I’ve had a great time. I like being active and I’m able to get to know and meet other professionals, professors, students and so much more.”

During the fall semester, the club was active during tailgating for football games as they did face painting for school spirit. In addition, they acted as ball-persons at home volleyball games, volunteered at McKee’s Halloween ‘Terror at the Zoo,’ catered the Women’s Fair that was held at the Student Union Building in November and will continue to sell T-shirts and sweaters featuring Benny the Bengal at women’s home basketball games.

The club regularly organizes a 5K-triathlon event and basketball tournaments, which are open to the community.

“It’s always important to not just be focused on education but to reach out to others and show that you care for your school and community,” said Martin. “Not to mention, every job you apply for is going to ask what kind of service you’ve done.”

The club participates in a lot of activities to fundraise to send members to conferences locally, regionally and nationally.

In February, the club will participate in National Women’s Health Day, where several kids can attend the conference and be taught the basics of several sports. ISU athletics will also be involved, according to Martin.

This spring, several members will travel to Charlotte, N.C., for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Conference. The conference will take place April 23 to 27 and will feature guest speakers, honorees, athletes and researchers.

Martin called the event a good place for students to network. He added that oftentimes attendees get to see certain types of equipment before it goes on the market.

The club is open to all students at ISU regardless of major, program or class level and Martin encourages students to get involved.

“By being involved, I’ve been granted more opportunities,” said Martin.
