Dead Week Relief activities sponsored by the Union Program Council (UPC) are scheduled for next week. Starting Tuesday, April 30, and continuing through Thursday, May 2, UPC will hold stress relief events for students.
“It’s time for everybody to forget their stresses about finals,” said UPC Director Jordan Chapman.
“We start things off with Bob Ross Day,” said Chapman.
That event will be Tuesday in the Quad Lounge from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. On Wednesday, Rock the Quad is scheduled. Walking Dead Day events are scheduled throughout Thursday.
“We’re going to let people do some therapeutic painting,” Chapman said about Bob Ross Day. “We’ll have some watercolors, some juice boxes and some fruit snacks.”
Bob Ross, the longtime host of “The Joy of Painting” on PBS, is famous for painting, in his words, happy trees. “And happy clouds,” Chapman added.
The first 100 students to participate in the event will receive a free Bob Ross T-shirt. “It says, ‘Like a Ross’ on it, like ‘like a boss,’” said Chapman.
Wednesday’s Rock the Quad, which has been a monthly event at ISU, will feature outdoor games and a barbeque with hot dogs and free sunglasses for the first 150 students to arrive. Therapy dogs from Heart to Heart will be at Rock the Quad for students to play with and relax.
The aptly named Walking Dead Day, selected because it fits the theme of Dead Week, will include video games, face painting, giveaways and dodgeball.
Students can play zombie video games in the SUB at noon Thursday. That night at 7:00 p.m. will be a zombies versus humans dodgeball tournament. For the first 200 students, there will also be free “walking dead tacos,” which consist of taco ingredients piled on top of chips in the chip bag to create a mobile-friendly meal.
UPC members have been hard at work creating the Dead Week Relief schedule.
“We don’t ever want to put on an event that we don’t want to do ourselves,” said Chapman.
Richell Kuta, a UPC member, joked that the Dead Week Relief event concepts were born from “random ideas.” She said the diverse group of UPC members has varying interests, which leads to the creation of events that will be fun for the entire student body.
