CROSS COUNTRY LED BY FRESHMEN AT THE UTAH VALLEY INVITATIONAL

POCATELLO, Idaho – Freshman runners Reagan Badger and Garrett Condelario led the Idaho State University cross country teams to third place finishes at the Utah Valley Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The young Idaho State runners were unfazed by starting the season on the road. It was the first time ISU opened the season away since 2009.

Badger had the highest finish of any Idaho State athlete in fifth. She finished the three-mile course with a time of 19:06.9 and was less than 34 seconds off the lead pace. Three of the four finishers ahead of Badger were seniors from Utah Valley’s squad.

Samantha Johnston and Rachel McGovern had back-to-back finishes inside the top-10 in eighth and ninth place respectively. Johnston edged McGovern by 0.4 seconds. Katie Weedn and Ashley Sondag rounded out the top-five for ISU in 16th and 17th.

Idaho State finished just behind Southern Utah in the team standings with a score of 53. The Thunderbirds outscored the Bengals by a point. Utah Valley won the meet with 24 points and Westminster College placed fourth with 115 points.

In the men’s race, Condelario led a trio of ISU runners across the line in seventh with a 16:01.5 finish. Sophomores Joseph Petty and Joseph Simmons crossed the line on the heels of Condelario in eighth and ninth respectively. The spread between Condelario and Simmons was 7.5 seconds.

Conner Oswald finished at the 16:25.6 mark in 16th and Jesse Allen claimed 20th with a 16:33.1 finish.

The men’s team claimed third overall with 59 points. Utah Valley won the meet with 33 points and Southern Utah finished second with 34 points.

The Bengals have two weeks to prepare for the Montana State Invitational on Sept. 16.
