Idaho State Head Softball Coach Cristal Brown has finalized her 2019-20 coaching staff. Joining Brown in Pocatello is Sabrina Boyd and Randy Clark as assistant coaches and Madalyn Smith as a graduate student manager.

Boyd comes to Idaho State in pursuit of starting her coaching career after competing collegiately at Corban University where she received her degree in accounting with a minor in criminal justice.  During her four year career as a college athlete, Boyd became the record-holder in single-season innings pitched (202.1), single-season wins (23), single-season appearances (36), single-season games started (32), single-season shutouts (9), career ERA (2.18), career innings pitched (497.2), career wins (54), career appearances (103), career games started (73), and career shutouts (17).

“Sabrina is making a jump from her job as an Auditor at Moss Adams in Eugene, Oregon to pursue a coaching path,” Brown said. “Her success and experience a s a pitcher at Corban will have a great impact on our pitching staff on the field but more importantly her work ethic, dedication to excellence, and desire to invest in the lives of athletes makes her the perfect fit. Sabrina has a joyful and positive spirit and energy about her that is going to be such a fabulous addition to Idaho State softball.”

In 2018, Boyd helped lead the Warriors to the program’s second-straight NAIA Tournament, boasting a 20-8 record and 1.76 ERA to go alongside 21 complete games and nine shutouts. She was named CCC Pitcher of the Year for the second-consecutive year for her performance. In 2017, she led her team to a National Runner-Up finish in the NAIA National Tournament in Clermont, Florida after winning the CCC regular season championship. Boyd set multiple school records during the 2017 season pitching 36 games and starting in 32 while holding a 1.73 ERA. She left the opposing teams to a .276 batting average during 202.1 total innings. She earned NAIA All-American Honorable Mention plaudits, was named the CCC Pitcher of the Year, named First-Team All-Conference honors, contributed to her team earning NAIA Scholar-Team accolades and being named the George Pasero Team of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards.

In 2016, the program appeared at the CCC Tournament where Boyd registered three wins and one loss in 24.1 innings pitched. She recorded a season 3.74 ERA while compiling 16 strikeouts. She helped her program earn NAIA Scholar-Team Honors. Her freshman season in 2015 was the program’s first CCC Tournament Championship title. Boyd helped her team to a NAIA National Tournament appearance while starting eight out of 23 games pitched. She threw two shutouts and 82.1 innings total, recording an 8-4 record with a 3.74 ERA.

Clark joins the program after eight years as Associate Head Coach at Whitworth University where he worked alongside Brown.

“I could not be more thankful to have Randy come alongside me in this new adventure at Idaho State,” Brown said. “We have navigated the softball world together in various ways for about 25 years and make a great team. I am so fortunate to have someone of his caliber assist me in leading this team. Everything he touches succeeds, so that’s a good thing for Idaho State softball.”

During his eight seasons at Whitworth, Clark played an integral role in helping develop the Pirates into three-time Northwest Conference champions (2015-17), the first softball titles in school history.

Before Whitworth, he coached at The Master’s College for three seasons from 2000-2003. His first season was the inaugural year for the program and by the third year he led the program to an NAIA postseason appearance while also breaking into the top 25 national rankings. Clark coached highly competitive travel ball teams for seven years in California before coaching collegiately. He led his 18-under teams to top-four finishes twice at the national ASA tournament where he coached many athletes who went on to become All-Americans at both the DI and DII Levels.

Clark received his B.A. from Cedarville (OH) University, his Masters of Science in Accounting from Kent State University, and earned a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine University. He was honored as alumnus of the year in 2010 by the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University. He currently serves on the boards of companies including Spice World and Farmer Brothers Coffee which is a publicly traded company. Clark has served as CEO for many private equity owned, financially challenged companies and is routinely being retained for consulting services.

Smith comes to Pocatello as an Occupational Therapy Grad Student at Idaho State. She received her undergraduate at Northwest Nazarene University where she was also a member of the softball program.

“Maddy is going to be a fantastic addition to our staff,” Brown said. “She has such a great attitude and will be a constant source of encouragement to the team. We are so thankful for her willingness and desire to help in anyway needed.”
