Now Accepting Submissions

Black Rock & Sage, Idaho State University’s creative arts journal, is accepting students’ submissions until Thursday, Feb. 14. The journal is published yearly by the English Department.
Artistic categories published in Black Rock & Sage include fiction, poetry, essays, photography, paintings, music, maps, costume design and more. All ISU students are invited to submit their works of art to the journal.
“We like to define ourselves as a creative arts journal,” said Steven Hall, the journal’s editor-in-chief.
Black Rock & Sage was originally a literary magazine. In 2008, Dr. Susan Goslee became the magazine’s adviser, launching the effort to redefine Black Rock & Sage as a creative arts journal rather than solely a literary magazine, according to Hall.
Doing so “allows a much wider spectrum of art, and students creating art on campus to get involved and possibly get their work published,” Hall said.
“We are trying not to have any boundaries. It’s been kind of a fun journey each year to see what we can include that we’ve never included before,” he added.
Under Goslee’s supervision, Black Rock & Sage shifted to a publication created for and by ISU students.Goslee teaches Literary Magazine Production each spring. The class reviews submissions to Black Rock & Sage and is responsible for the publication of the magazine.
Faculty members from the Art and Music Departments assist Black Rock & Sage in reviewing submissions. All submissions are judged anonymously, according to the publication’s website.
“Every year we are looking for ways we can involve more students,” Hall said.He said the magazine’s efforts to include new categories of art are ongoing.
“This year we’ve made contact with some students doing costume design. That’s something we’ve never seen before,” said Hall.
“It’s always exciting for us to see what we’ll receive and how that might be incorporated into the journal.”
In order to accept music submissions, Black Rock & Sage began to include a CD in every edition.
The magazine receives around 200 submissions each year. Students will be notified about the status of their submissions near the end of April.
